The Scoop with Wedding Cakes:
Have you guys seen the cost of wedding cakes these days?! They can be absolutely outrageous! And for someone who isn’t all that into cake (aka: someone like me), I want to tell you what I did to save some serious bucks at our wedding!
What We Did:
Now don’t get me wrong, I still wanted (and had) a beautiful wedding cake, but I wasn’t willing to fork out $1,000 just to be able to give each guest one measly slice of cake. I wanted something beautiful, meaningful, filling, and affordable.
So as an alternative to a 4-tier wedding cake, we purchased an affordable 2-tier cake and supplemented with a “Pot Luck” Dessert Table.
After we picked out and ordered our beautiful/delicious, coffee flavored, 2-tiered wedding cake, we got to work figuring out exactly how many guests it would feed. Our 10 inch cake would produce approximately 66 slices (counting the top layer- we decided not to save it). This cost us around $220.00
Now we needed to feed about 130 more people…
*Our wedding cake was made my Sweetie Pie by Savie.*
How We Did It:
Disclaimer: My Mom and Maw Maw should really be writing this since they were the masterminds behind our dessert table, but hey, I’m giving them credit here, right?
Once we figured out how many more people we needed to feed treats to, we then reached out to some of our sweet family members (who we knew liked to bake) to see if they would be interested in whipping up something for the wedding.
I was nervous about this at first, but you would be surprised at how much joy some family members got out of this. My Maw Maw and Great Aunt Joyce being two of them 🙂 Needless to say, we got a great response!
When reaching out, I wasn’t picky about what treats they should bring, I simply created a “sign up” sheet in a Google Doc so everyone participating could see if there were too many apple pies or red velvet cupcakes.
I get by with a little help from my friends (and family)!
Thanks to our sweet family members, our “Pot Luck” Dessert Table was fully stocked with:
∴ 32 Mini Pumpkin Pies
∴ Homemade Sugar Cookies
∴ Carrot Cake
∴ 2 Lemon Cheesecakes
∴ 32 Mini Pecan Pies
∴ Assorted Mini Cheesecakes
∴ Chocolate Chip Cookies
∴ Italian Cream Cake
∴ Pecan Pie Bars
I mean, is your mouth watering? I know mine is!
How we said “Thank You!”
We wanted to do something extra special to show our appreciation for these generous (and delicious) gifts. But instead of purchasing little knick-knacks or giving them scented candles, we decided to actually showcase their generosity in the decor of the wedding!
We did this by ordering Mini Chalkboard Signs from Amazon and writing things like “Lemon Cheesecake: Love, Maw Maw” or “Sugar Cookies, baked with love from Aunt Debbie.”
To me, it was a super meaningful way to incorporate our family members, save a significant amount of money, and provide homemade treats for our guests.
I mean, come on, who doesn’t love sweets baked by a grandma?!
